Candy, Costumes, & Kryptonite

October 30, 2018

We are one day away from the annual tradition of kids putting on costumes in the pursuit of bags full of candy. While Halloween may simply seem to be a fun holiday for kids (and the young at heart!), it can also teach us a valuable lesson about ourselves.

Due to the renewed popularity of superhero movies, I imagine I am going to see lots of kids dressed as Wonder Woman, Iron Man, and Captain America again this year. The idea that the average person (like the “mild mannered reporter” Clark Kent) can possess a superpower must be appealing, as we would all like to turn into a better version of ourselves.

If you could “dress up” as your definition of a superhero, what would you look like? What superpower would you have that you don’t currently possess? The skills you want but currently lack are your career kryptonite…holding you back from being the best version of yourself.

I am using an analogy to talk about the concept of Skills Gaps, which can be defined as:

“The difference in the skills needed to perform a job and those actually possessed by the employee”.

A thorough Skills Gap Analysis is a valuable part of the Career Planning Process and can help you develop a plan to develop a new “superpower”.

“This won't do. What's the matter with you?

All it takes is faith and trust.

Oh! And... just a little bit of pixie dust."

- Peter Pan

Peter Pan was wrong. Change is hard and there is no "pixie dust" that serves as a substitute for making a commitment to the difficult and often unnoticed work that is required.

In addition, please enjoy these two podcasts regarding the process of change. Podcasts are great because you can listen to them in the car, and I encourage you to begin using your daily commute as “Superpower” creation time!
